Guns in our modern civilization... @ 11:05 on Tuesday, December 18, 2012
What happened in Connecticut is hard breaking. 18 Children had their entire lives a head of them and it was taken away by one deranged individual. Unfortunately, shootings are not uncommon here in the states. It's sparked the hot topic of the right to bare arms, and has become the main social topic this holiday season. I have friends that are religious gun owners, and I have friends that think guns should stay out of citizens hands. There seems to be a feud going on between them. I myself am not a gun aficionado, however owning a gun is on my bucket list. I don't have a stance at the moment on this jargon everyone is up in arms about, but I do have a stance on what the media is doing wrong and why something like this continues to happen.

Every time a shooting happens, with in an hour it's all over cable news channels. Then after that it's covered for weeks and weeks. The shooters names are mentioned over and over. Psychologists are largely ignored when something like this happens because they all say the same thing. STOP TALKING ABOUT IT ON TV. Why do these deranged people kill? Attention. All the media is doing is inspiring more mentally ill individuals. Attention, albeit negative attention, is going to beget more shootings. All the media is doing is creating Martyr after Martyr after Martyr. What the media should be doing is keeping something this under wraps. Not only would it discourage or inspire more deranged individuals, it would have stopped any unnecessary explosion of debate and anger between citizens.

That being said, I'm sure making it harder to get a gun will probably reduce shootings. But the real control starts at conception. Education, a good moral upbringing, and a responsible parent is what really stops shootings. Combined with the prevention of the media creating martyrs, maybe some day shootings will be a barbaric thing of the past along with public executions and lynching. But even with just gun control I'm afraid something like this will still happen, may it be with a bomb or a plane. This is the world. Bad things happen, very often. But don't let the bad things guide what you know is right and just. I'm not sure what the answer is in regards to gun control, but we have to tread very carefully. With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.

The first civilization, the Sumerians were wise beyond their days. Their wisdom in the form of story and myth applies even today, "We have the gift civilization, if we want to benefit from a civilized life, we must accept it all or none of it."
